WHEN YOUR CHILD IS ILL

Reasons Your Child Should Stay Home:

  1. The temperature of 100.0 degrees F or more WITH OR WITHOUT SYMPTOMS OF ILLNESS
  2. Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  3. Severe colds, coughs, or sore throats
  4. While you are awaiting the results of a medical provider-ordered laboratory test (i.e. throat culture, nasal swab) until the results are known.
  5. New skin rashes, specifically if draining and not able to be covered – unless the medical opinion states that the rash is not contagious.
  6. Report absences to the applicable Building Attendance Office
    • Give your student’s name
    • Teacher/Grade
    • Nature of why absent (i.e. symptoms, temp > 100, appointments, diagnosis, etc.)
If your child becomes ill at school and needs to go home, for security and safety reasons, they must go through the Health Services Office.  Health Services staff will contact the student’s parents/guardian.

If staff are unable to reach a parent/guardian, and determine the student must go home, emergency contacts will be called.  It is important for parents to have their emergency contact list updated, and that someone is available to be reached during the day.

If your child stays home and has the care he/she needs when first sick, he/she will often get better faster.  Staying home and resting will help the body fight the sickness.  It is also one of the best ways to keep others from becoming ill.

1. Temperature remains normal for a 24-hour period without using fever-reducing medication.
2. Improvement of symptoms for 24 hours (i.e. has not vomited, has not had diarrhea)
3. Well enough to participate in normal school activities
4. Has been on antibiotics for at least 12 hours if antibiotics have been ordered by a medical provider.
5. Your health care provider states that your child can return to school.  Please provide a Doctor’s note.

Remember:  The best ways to prevent the spread of germs are to WASH YOUR HANDS, PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING, COVER YOUR COUGH/SNEEZE, STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE FEELING ILL, APPROPRIATELY WEAR A FACE COVERING IF/WHEN IT IS RECOMMENDED BY PUBLIC HEALTH.

1. If a student has been absent from school for an extended amount of time, Health Services may request a doctor’s note from the child’s health care provider, along with any support needed to help the student return to school.
2. If a student has an injury or other medical condition that requires specific student support, care, or accommodations. (i.e. crutches, dressing changes, etc., ice/cold packs for swelling/pain management).
3. When the Doctor requires limited or no participation in Physical Education or other Physical Activities. (i.e. concussion, injury, surgery, etc.)

1. If your child is diagnosed with a contagious disease, please notify the school as soon as possible.
2. If your child has a new or change in diagnosis.
3. If your child has surgery. This is especially important if the absence is prolonged, if there is a need for special equipment or accommodations or care during the student’s school day.
4. Any other health concerns that you would like the health staff to be aware of to appropriately care for your child at school.

If a student requires emergency care (either due to illness or injury), health services staff will attempt to contact the parent, guardian, or other designated emergency contact.

If a parent or specified contact is unavailable, and health services staff deems an ambulance necessary, designated school personnel will arrange transport to the hospital, as listed on the student information.  If no hospital is specified, the student will be taken to Mayo – St. Mary’s Campus, Rochester.  Please keep Health Services updated with emergency contact information, and keep the school up to date with home and work phone numbers.

We want the best support for your child when returning to school.
