STEWARTVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OPEN CAMPUS POLICY

Whereas:  Seniors are approaching the time in their lives in which they will be independent adults and will have to be responsible for making the right decisions.  Therefore, seniors are allowed open campus privileges.

Terms/Definitions:
  1. Open Study Hall: Study hall that allows freedom to travel outside of school and is unsupervised.  Students in open study hall must sign in with the office or the teacher in charge of the study hall.  This is not the same as honors study hall, which operates under the same principle but restricts students from leaving the school.  Note: Typically students sign in at the beginning of the class period; however, first hour open study hall students will not be required to sign in until 8:52 A.M., the end of first period.  These students may sign in earlier, but it is not required.
  2. Open Campus: Open campus consists of open study hall and open lunch.
  3. Open lunch: Allows students to travel outside of school for lunch.  Open lunch will operate side by side with closed lunch; that is, they have the same scheduled time.
Guidelines:
  1. This open study hall/campus is available to all seniors beginning with the first quarter.  Once grades are posted at the end of the first quarter seniors must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in order to maintain this privilege.
  2. The open study hall/campus is also available to juniors who are taking a minimum of three credits or college prep classes with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.  Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, open study hall/campus will no longer be available to juniors.
  3. All students involved in this program must have a release form signed by a parent/guardian.  This release form will be held on file by the school administration.
  4. Students will leave through the main entrance and upon returning, present their ID to regain entry into the school.  This will allow the school to know where the students are, as well as allowing the collection of statistics for evaluating the program.
Violations/Consequences
  1. A major predicted problem is tardiness.  Three tardys (as defined by the teachers) will warrant expulsion from the program.
  2. Students with discipline referrals and/or unexcused absences will lose their open campus privileges.
  3. Students who transport students not involved in the program will also warrant expulsion from the program.
  4. Any property damage caused by a student or group of students will be their responsibility, and they will have to pay any fines, etc… that may ensue.  The school will not be held accountable.  Students who cause damage will be expelled from the program.
