Grade Advancement Procedures

1. An inquiry regarding advanced academic challenge may be made by parent(s), advocate, student, teacher, administrator, or district talent development coordinator based on evidence of above-grade achievement and/or ability.

2. A Teacher Input Form must be completed by current classroom teacher(s). A Parent Survey Form must be completed by parent(s).

3. An informational meeting for initial data collection with the district talent development coordinator, teacher(s), parent(s), district school psychologist, and building principal will take place. Parents and teachers are encouraged to share any background information and data at this time.

4. If grade advancement consideration is deemed inappropriate at this time, other educational options (subject advancement, differentiated instruction, etc.) should be considered and discussed.

5. If grade advancement consideration will be pursued, the following data will be collected:
a. WISC and Woodcock-Johnson assessments, administered by district school psychologist
b. Informal interview and grade-level assessments will be conducted by district talent development coordinator

6. No test data from outside sources will be considered.

7. District talent development coordinator and district school psychologist will discuss results of formal and informal assessments, and will determine if grade advancement criteria has been met.

8. District talent development coordinator, teacher(s), parent(s), district school psychologist, and building principal will meet to discuss testing results and recommendations. (If student qualifies for advancement, a teacher at the new grade level should also be present.)

9. If whole-grade advancement is recommended, it should be made at an appropriate time. Review of student progress by the district talent development coordinator will be made within 9 weeks after placement to determine if it is appropriate.

NOTE: Per Stewartville Public School’s current policy regarding no early entrance to kindergarten, requests of this nature for grade advancement will not be considered.
