1001A.b APPROPRIATE PARENT AND STAFF COMMUNICATION AND INTERACTIONS

I. PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to set forth the School Board’s expectations with regard to appropriate parent and staff communication and interactions.

II. GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY

A. The School District is committed to an environment in which all staff and parents are treated with respect and dignity. The School Board encourages parent and staff communication and interaction, provided that communication and interactions between parents and staff comply with the reasonable expectations established by the School Board.

B. This policy applies to any and all communications and interactions between School District staff and parents of students attending school within the School District.

III. COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERACTIONS

A. When communicating or otherwise interacting with one another, whether in person, through writing, or by any other method, parents and staff members are expected to speak in a conversational tone and to treat with other with courtesy, dignity, and respect. Parents and staff are expected to refrain from engaging in inappropriate or disrespectful behaviors when communicating or otherwise interacting with one another. Examples of inappropriate or disrespectful behaviors that will not be tolerated by the School District include, but are not limited to, the following

1. Inappropriately raised voices;
2. Shouting or yelling towards each other;
3. Obscene or foul language
4. Insulting another’s intelligence, judgment, or motive;
5. Threats or intimidating behavior, including but not limited to suggestions of violence or negative consequences if demands are not met;
6. The use of any physical force, including unpermitted or unwelcome touching of any staff member or parent, regardless of whether pain or injury results.

B. Each Building Principal/administrator has the authority to place reasonable limits on the form and amount of communication and interaction between parents and staff members.

C. Absent of extenuating circumstances, School District staff are expected to respond to all communications (email, phone messages, written notes, etc.) they receive from parents of students attending school within the District within two (2) school days of their receipt of the communication.

IV. SCHOOL VISITS

A. Except in emergency situations, parents must schedule meetings with staff members at least one business day in advance of the proposed meeting date.

B. In addition to the requirements set forth in this policy, as set forth in Stewartville School District Policy 903 (Visitors to School District Buildings and Sites) parents must comply with the School Board approved visitor procedures and requirements.

V. REPORTING AND INVESTIGATION

A. Complaints and/or concerns regarding alleged violations of this policy shall be handled in accordance with Stewartville School District Policy 103, (Complaints-Students, Employees, Parents, Other Persons) unless other specific complaint procedures are provided within any other policy of the school district.

B. District staff shall cooperate with any investigation of alleged behavior, interactions or communications in violation of this policy.
